Formula Racing - Not Just for the Professionals

The world of Formula car racing is undoubtedly for the elite, the brave, and the exceptionally talented. However, it remains a realm I am almost sure most of us average petrolheads, me included, dream to play in one day. Whilst it's common knowledge that we all can't be seven-time world champions like Lewis Hamilton, the question begs, is there a racing series just for average joes? The short answer to that is a resounding Yes! However, allow me to break it down for you a notch or two. Remember, it's all about fun and heart-thumping excitement, without bankrupting your savings account!

The Gateway to Power - Formula Ford

When it comes to racing, do you know your ability? How quick are your reflexes, and how well can you handle speed? More importantly, are you able to convert your living room dreams to the real asphalt track? Let's begin with Formula Ford, a category that has churned out great prospective champions like Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. Essentially, it's a form of open-wheel racing series where you can have a thrilling taste of professional racing without breaking the bank. In Australia, it has been a mainstay right from the 70s, with affordability as its major selling point. What you get is a scaled-down monocoque chassis with a 1.6L Duratec engine producing about 105 horsepower. Although this might not sound like much, in a car weighing just about 420 kg, it can reach a devilishly quick 220 km/h. And yes, no fancy assists like traction control or even anti-lock brakes. It's just you, the car, and the open roads - right where the rubber meets the tarmac, literally.

From a Dream to Reality – Formula Vee

Should Formula Ford be a tad too daunting for you, don't fret. Enter Formula Vee, the series that's known as the stepping-stone for those of us who just wish to get a feel of the racing atmosphere. The charm of this series lies in its simplicity and level playing field. No lavish checkbooks can buy you horsepower or fancy aerodynamics here. It typically runs on a tight budget and revolves around a Beetle engine of just 40 horsepower or so. Tiny, yes, but remember, it weighs a feather-like 500 kg. Again, no fancy driver aids. In terms of speed, you'll be looking at a maximum of around 160 km/h. Slow by racing standards, but when you're at the wheel, I guarantee it's nothing like a leisurely Sunday drive.

The Thrill Beyond Wheel - Kart Racing

For those who are on even tighter strains, there's always the world of kart racing. It's a category close to my heart as I spent a considerable portion of my youth whipping small go-karts around the local track. I wasn’t a professional by any means, but it was an exhilarating experience I cherish to this day. Kart racing clubs around Australia offer various classes based on your comfort level, be it a casual hobbyist or a tentatively serious amateur. Good ol’ 2-stroke 100cc engines power most of these karts. Compact, nimble, and undeniably feisty, these are quite literally the ground-floor introduction to the mad world of racing.

Le Mans in your Backyard – Enduro Racing Series

You must have heard of the famed Le Mans 24-hour endurance trial, if not watched it. How about participating in something similar close to home, and with much fewer zeroes in the cheque amount? Does it sound interesting, or does it sound interesting? Well then, welcome to the world of Enduro racing. These are effectively prolonged, usually more than 3 hours, relay races. It is made for the enthusiasts, by the enthusiasts. For example, the MG Car Club's annual Six Hour Regularity Relay brings together quirky, unconventional cars battling it out no less fiercely than their bigger, louder cousins. It’s all about strategy, teamwork, and tons of fun.

Catch the Racing Bug – Time Attack series

Getting into a racing car doesn't have to be a massive investment, especially if you are bursting with enthusiasm and would love to clock some speedy times. There isn't a most friendly arena than the Time Attack series in this case. Regardless of your background, you have a chance to measure your talent against the clock. Typically, in a Time Attack race, drivers battle out to set a fastest single lap in a specific time frame. Believe me, when you're at the wheel, concentrated on nothing but beating the clock, it amplifies the adrenaline rush to a whole new level.

So you see, my average-joe friends, racing doesn't just have to be a pipe dream. It's a broad, inclusive field, with various niches to dip our toes into. So whether its karting, Formula Vee or Ford, Enduro racing, or Time Attack series, there's a racing series out there for all petrolheads to don the helmet and live those racing dreams. And remember, it's not just about the outright speed. It's about the thrill, the excitement, the comradeship, and the sheer joy of being a part of something bigger than you. After all, we race not because it's practical or profitable, but because it’s fun and absolutely electrifying!
